“Study hard, party harder” – Karl Marx
The Party Committee is UCM’s go-to society for anything party-related. We aim to organize at least three events every year: a Halloween party, a winter gala and a summer ball.
Organizing these involves a range of tasks such as brainstorming, discussing and settling on a theme, scouting for DJs, contacting possible venues, buying decorations, settling drinking deals and promoting our events through social media and face-to-face communication. Especially the promoting of a party is important, and our work does not really start until about two weeks prior to the event when the Facebook event is made public, posters are being printed and distributed and tickets have arrived. Another important party-planning stage is the initial brainstorming and discussions about party names and themes. You may ask what’s in a name, but a name makes a party. Too long, too dull and dreary; too cliché and no one will take it seriously. This is why a lot of our creative energy is expended on a party name and theme, with some heated debate and some fun themes as a result.
The Party Committee aims to shift UCMers from the couches in the common room and the desks of the reading room, to the dance floors of Maastricht’s pubs and clubs. We want to provide a way for UCMers to get together, hang out and let loose outside of the walls of our beloved building, and the eyes of its beloved occupants. Whatever your strengths, if you enjoy a good party, or if you like organizing one, the Party Committee would love your input.
