Academic Council

Who are we?
The Universalis Academic Council was founded in January 2013 to enrich the academic community at UCM in creative and systematic ways. It consists of five members that are approved by the Universalis General Assembly. They are responsible for enhancing the academic life at UCM in two ways: As (i) student representatives in the Board of Studies and the Management Team and (ii) through the active execution of their position in the Academic Council.

Chair (Ríon McCall Magan)
The Chair carries the responsibility for the overall goals and interests of the Academic Council, chairs its meetings and keeps an overview on the upcoming tasks and events. He keeps in contact with the Universalis Social Board and serves as a contact person for the Office of the Dean. He represents the students in the Management Team.

Our role in the Management Team
The MT is a body consisting of staff members and three student representatives – two from the Universalis Social Board and one representative from the Academic Council – supporting the Dean in the management of UCM. The bi-weekly meetings crucial in order to keep each other updated on current and prospective issues of student body, academic and organisational affairs. The MT meeting should also be used to request information from the staff or to communicate the views of the student body to the staff. The AC focuses on acting as a bridge between the student body’s opinions and the UCM administration through requests or views brought forward in person/via email or Facebook or during UCM Forums. Students’ concerns or ideas are taken very seriously by the management so don’t hesitate to contact us to give input!

Our role in the Education Program Committee (earlier “Board of Studies”)
The Education Program Committee safeguards the quality of education and acts as an advisory body to the UCM management on content and quality of the UCM curriculum. It consists of four staff members from different faculties and four student representatives, whose main task is to keep track of the course evaluations, identify recurring and pressing issues and approach students directly in order to get information about the quality of the courses and the problems at hand. Apart from evaluating the quality of the courses, the Education Program Committee engages in several other tasks, such as revising the UCM Teachers Handbook and Course Catalogue, approving or remarking about changes within the Rules and Regulations of UCM and constantly reflecting about the quality of UCM as a learning institution in order to consider ways in which it can be improved.

How can you contact us?
We are always open to hear from you and your opinion on UCM and its academic life. Feel free to approach us, whether you have an idea for a new event or initiative, a suggestion or comment on our work or a problem with one of your courses.

Talk to us in person: You can find us at our desk in the Universalis Boardroom!

Hear ye, hear ye!
Audit General Assembly is happening on November 15th, at 18:30 in D0.033!
Mainly, we will be passing the semester report, including the financial report from the fall. The Independent Body will be auditing the books and financial report at the start of the GA. We will also look at the phrasing changes made to the Statutes. More excitingly, we will be introducing a new candidate committee, a new IB member, as well as announcing the positions in the Social Board and the AC which will soon be opened! Yay!
Find the agenda, the minutes from our last GA, the semester and the financial report, the policy manual, and the statutes on the UCMSA Universalis website: ucmsauniversalis.com under 'Documents' before the GA. Confused on how to GA? The Website also houses the GA Crash Course given by the IB! Motions can be sent to independentbody@gmail.com before the 8th of November 2017.
ALL committee board members are required to attend the GA. Any other students are more than welcome to join the GA as well. This is your opportunity to participate in the democratic process. If you cannot attend, please find someone to proxy for you. Proxy forms can be found on the website but you can also come pick them up in the board room. They must be signed by the person missing the GA as well as dated and handed in before the beginning of the GA to the Universalis Social Board Secretary (Eleanor Máire Kelly).

As per usual, we will have beers and snacks as a treat in the end!

Looking forward to seeing you there,
Your Universalis Board(s) xoxo
