Academic Council

 

Who are we?
The Universalis Academic Council was founded in January 2013 to enrich the academic community at UCM in creative and systematic ways. It consists of five members that are approved by the Universalis General Assembly. They are responsible for enhancing the academic life at UCM in two ways: As (i) student representatives in the Board of Studies and the Management Team and (ii) through the active execution of their position in the Academic Council.

Chair (Flo Saal)
The Chair carries the responsibility for the overall goals and interests of the Academic Council, chairs its meetings and keeps an overview on the upcoming tasks and events. He keeps in contact with the Universalis Social Board and serves as a contact person for the Office of the Dean. He represents the students in the Management Team.

Treasurer (Svea Grünkorn)
The Treasurer’s main task is the financial administration of the AC. He or she is also responsible for the coordination of the Mentor Program for the Freshmen and Exchange students, and the organisation of Peer Reviews. The Treasurer is a member of the Board of Studies.

Internal Executive (Jonas Mago)
The Internal Executive is responsible for the online administration of the AC and the promotion of the AC’s events. He or she is responsible for the organisation of Comments and Cookies, the UCM-Forum, and the preparation of official statements by the AC. He or she is a member of the Board of Studies.

Events Coordinator (Olga Bostan)
The Event Coordinator is responsible for the organisation of the AC’s events such as the Big Event at the end of each semester, the November Notes and the Master Week. He or she is a member of the Board of Studies.

External Executive (Marieke van der Maden)
The External Executive represents the Academic Council in the association University College Student Representatives of the Netherlands (UCSRN). Here you can find more information on the UCSRN. Moreover, the External Executive is responsible for the coordination of the exchange with University College Freiburg. The External Executive serves as a contact person for the Faculty Council and is a member in the Board of Studies.

Our role in the Management Team
The MT is a body consisting of staff members and three student representatives – two from the Universalis Social Board and one representative from the Academic Council – supporting the Dean in the management of UCM. The bi-weekly meetings crucial in order to keep each other updated on current and prospective issues of student body, academic and organisational affairs. The MT meeting should also be used to request information from the staff or to communicate the views of the student body to the staff. The AC focuses on acting as a bridge between the student body’s opinions and the UCM administration through requests or views brought forward in person/via email or Facebook or during UCM Forums. Students’ concerns or ideas are taken very seriously by the management so don’t hesitate to contact us to give input!

Our role in the Board of Studies
The Board of Studies safeguards the quality of education and acts as an advisory body to the UCM management on content and quality of the UCM curriculum. It consists of four staff members from different faculties and four student representatives, whose main task is to keep track of the course evaluations, identify recurring and pressing issues and approach students directly in order to get information about the quality of the courses and the problems at hand. Apart from evaluating the quality of the courses, the Board of Studies engages in several other tasks, such as revising the UCM Teachers Handbook and Course Catalogue, approving or remarking about changes within the Rules and Regulations of UCM and constantly reflecting about the quality of UCM as a learning institution in order to consider ways in which it can be improved.

Vote for which movie you want to be screened in the poll of this event. There will be 50 cents beers too! Tickets are 3 euros. Money from ticket sales goes to charity!

All of the new committee boards are requested to meet briefly to get to know their new executives and treasurer, get a brief overview of how semester plans work and assistance in filling them out if necessary, meet other committee boards with whom they may want to collaborate, and ask the board any questions they have about the upcoming semester! ...
